Virtues’ new EP “You’re Alive’ is so likeable with so many elements that are working beautifully, despite my songwriter’s compelling need to read the lyrics, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and dive deep into the ‘feel’ of the song.
It’s got a 70s rock vibe (musicians HATE to be slotted or compared – I know I did). We don’t like to be put in a box.
But I kinda now finally get why there’s a “sounds like” check box everywhere – how else to describe a new song? A new band? A new sound?
You have to compare it to something to describe it. You have to give your fans words besides “ya gotta hear them they’re amazing”. “They rock the room”. If every fan of every band said the exact same thing – well, you get the point.
I’m liking the fact that good straight ahead rock music is alive and well. And that somehow, Virtues make their songs on “You’re Alive” sound retro and neo rock at the same time. Shades of the 70s with a fresh spin.
On *Architect* I love the vocalist’s voice – in command of her chops, managing to cut through the gritty band. I always marvel at the soundscapes musicians create – sometimes by design, sometimes by accident or sometimes meticulously devised.
Somehow I get the feeling that the soundscape on all the songs happened organically because nothing sounds formulaic or contrived. The singer’s voice has its own unique place in mix of the band that is not competing with any frequency. They are gritty and rocking – she is soaring through the middle.
Love the chorus and the way she slides her notes – it’s hooky, The harmonies are divine, too.
*Sugar Rush* is just that – a rush. *Hey You* starts off with lovely vocals and guitar then when the rest of the band joins in, they don’t overpower. Was a lovely change of pace and shows their versatility.
Band is great, vocals are great, song is great. I agree with the other reviewer’s opinion that ‘they deserve a little more attention’. Whether they win the Fudge Awards or not, they are a band to watch.
